The Project
I developed a complete automated system to extract and analyze financial data from luxury conglomerates' annual reports, focusing on Kering and LVMH across 2022-2024.
The goal? Create an end-to-end pipeline from PDF extraction to interactive visualization, demonstrating skills in cloud computing, data engineering, and business intelligence.
Methodology & Tech Stack
🤖 Data Extraction: AWS Lambda PDF Parser
I developed a custom AWS Lambda function using Python to automatically extract financial metrics from PDF annual reports:
- PyPDF2 for PDF text extraction
- Regex patterns for company-specific data formats
- Smart billion/million conversion logic
- Extraction of 10-15 key metrics per report (revenue, margins, net income, segments)
☁️ Storage: AWS S3
Extracted data automatically uploaded to AWS S3 with:
- Organized structure by company and fiscal year
- JSON format for raw extractions
- CSV exports for Tableau connectivity
- Server-side encryption for security
📊 Analysis: Tableau
Interactive dashboard allowing to:
- Compare revenue trends across 3 years
- Analyze profitability metrics and margins
- Explore segment performance (brands vs geographic)
- Identify key business insights
Dataset
- • Kering (FY 2022, 2023, 2024): €20.4bn → €19.6bn → €17.2bn revenue
- • LVMH (FY 2022, 2023, 2024): €79.2bn → €86.2bn → €84.7bn revenue
Extracted data includes: revenue, operating income, net income, operating margins, cash flow, and segment breakdowns.
Key Insights
Scale Advantage
LVMH is 4.9x larger than Kering (€84.7bn vs €17.2bn in 2024)
LVMH operating income (€19.6bn) exceeds Kering's total revenue
Kering's Crisis
Revenue declined 16% (2022-2024)
Net income collapsed 70% from €3.6bn to €1.1bn
Operating margin halved: 27.5% → 14.9%
Brand Performance
Gucci (Kering's flagship): -27% decline (€10.5bn → €7.7bn)
Heavy reliance on single brand creates vulnerability
Geographic Diversification
LVMH balanced: Asia €23.2bn, US €21.6bn, Europe €14.5bn
Japan strong growth: +38% (2022-2024)
